A Christian Democrat?

This week, an old nameless guy said to me, “how can you be a Democrat and a Christian at the same time?”

Hmmmmm….

Before I go any further, this is not a political blog, and I am not out start a war of words here, but this being an election year, I thought I would wax for a bit regarding this gentleman’s comment.

Before I reconcile my choice to be both a follower of Christ and a Democrat, I must say that I am not a big believer in “political parties.” Parties exist so that people with like ideals can band together. I don’t put any faith in my party, however, in our current system, you are given two options. (Independent is not really a choice…it’s kind of a copout. I actually was registered independent during the Perot campaign. Remember Perot? Are you thinking of Dana Carvey as Perot? me too….I digress)

Two options. Here is how I see my options. Conservativism sits inside the Republican camp which, at it’s most basic ideal is about being left alone. Leave me alone and don’t tax me. It says that we can all do much better on our own. In America, it is now entwined with our capitalism. To me, Conservatism is individualism…looking out for numero uno.

Option two, is Liberalism, which lives in the Democrat camp. The ideal of liberalism is that we look out for each other. We are all equal, so therefore, we should all have the same opportunities. In America, that boils down to more taxes, more government, and more programs that are intended to aid those who couldn’t just do it for themselves.

While I am very aware of the fact that there are some very sticky moral issues that divide these ideals, I believe that my mindset is that of a liberal. Sorry, there it is. The more I listen to conservative pundits on talkradio and the like, the more I see that that they’re first question when they approach an issue is, “how will this affect me?” While in my selfishness, I don’t deny that there are those tendencies, I push through them because of my faith in Christ. My faith in God’s Kingdom. I believe that Jesus was very clear that this life should not be about you, but about your neighbor. The purpose of life here is not to store up treasures on earth but in heaven…therefore, I don’t believe that the American Dream, is God’s dream.

(let me say again just incase I wasn’t clear. Adam is not saying Jesus is a Democrat…only that he is…okay? we cool? I know this post is a little heavy)

My convictions when it comes to things like the death penalty, abortion, gay marriage, immigration, and the whole host of “hotbutton” issues that normally crop up in this discussion are, I believe, consistent with God’s Word. We can discuss that later, but just know I have a very “consistent” ethic on human life…I believe murder, is murder. No matter if you call it a choice, or call it punishment, it’s still murder.

I am simply saying that the whole notion that Christians are Republicans is an outdated one. It’s just not true anymore. I bet if polled our church (secretly of course) to see the party lines, I would lay 10 to 1 that it’s about 60-40 Red-Blue.

What do you think? Is this subject still too hard for people to discuss? Am I entirely off base? Can I love Jesus and vote for a Democrat? Have I turned you all off completely?

Remember, I am a lover not a fighter.

    I believe that until the late 1960's most "Christians" would have claimed the Democratic party.


    I think Jesus would say, "vote your heart and follow me, after all it is my father who places people in authority."



    I still am not sure who I would vote for. In 1992 I voted for Clinton and again in 1996. In 2000 for Bush and again in 2008.



    I liked Obamma before he became a presidential canidate. He used to take stands on issues. Now, he says, "that is an issue we should discuss and allow debate." To me that is general vagueness that can possibly get him elected.



    Hilary is too strong for me, At times too forceful but at least you know where she stands. Probably not vague enough to win.



    McCain - Not sure how to describe him but if he puts Condelisa Rice on his ticket he may win.



    So Registered Republican voted 2 Dem and 2 Rep. I guess 2008 will break the tie, for now.



    So my answer, vote for who is best, with the chooses you are given. Ah ha, vague enough to get elected.

    Very well said. I think you have written here something which would take a lot of weight off the shoulders of devoted Christians who feel guilty for considering non-Republican choices. It's kind of like the Christian music thing I wrote about: I think some people have moved on from this issue, but probably most have not. It's still there.


    I also think Nathan is dead-on with his history. Christians who threw their hats in the public square in the near past were actually more often Democrats.



    But what if you are pro-life AND passionate about the poor? What party is THAT? Nope, we really DON'T belong to either party very well. When we do, we have to suppress some part of us to make it work. Neither the Republicans nor the Democrats can ever own "Christian."



    My favorite book title on the topic: "God's Politics: Why the Right is Wrong and Left Doesn't Get It."

    John, Jim Wallis' God's Politics" book is great. I recommend it for anyone.



    He's got another one called "Living God's Politics" and a new one called "The Great Awakening:Reviving Faith & Politics in a Post-Religious Right America" that I haven't picked up yet.



    I also feel like I should add that my point was not to say that I am a "party man" or that I think both parties ideals are not without their flaws. Sometimes, the Democratic mindset does not account for personal responsibility...in other words "The government will bail me out with welfare and aid, therefore I can be a slacker." I do not agree. We need to do our part to give and help, not to take.



    Just thought I would put that in there. My buddy Mark Ashley pointed out that hole yesterday as we stood around in his backyard.



    Also Jonathan, I agree that morally, there is no way to be consistent with either party. That was why I mentioned how I feel about abortion and the death penalty. My belief on abortion are way right, and my belief on death penalty is way left.



    I think that we are past the point where we identify with a party because of our morality. Neither party is squeaky clean in their decisions in policies in my opinion and therefore for me, it boils down to the social vs. individual aspect.



    Whoa, did I just say I was a socialist... :)



    Anyway, thanks to everyone so far for keeping it smart and "High Road" on the comments here.



    I am not trying to pigeonhole my God into some ideal, and I do not put my ultimate faith in politics for change.



    I'm just participating in the future of the country.

    I am Christian, and I regret what the religious right is doing in the name of religion. It is embarrassing at times to be a Christian with the selfishness and greed of the "Leave me alone and don't tax," mentality so prevalent in this group of people of which you speak. People tend to think these so-called Christians are representative of Christianity as a whole. However, Christ preached love and and looking out for one another, not selfishness, not greed, but instead selflessness. Jesus must be crying to see what people do in his name.

    Another group of phony Christians....A Christian is a follower of Jesus Christ.....It's not about what you think. It is about what HE says. HE says "Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God." in 1 Corinthians 6:9.....God is always merciful because HE doesn't give us what we deserve. HE is always giving grace because he gives us what we didn't deserve because of our disobedience. The Christian message is repentance. Jesus did NOT heal everyone, nor did he make everyone rich in money. We show Jesus' love to bring the unbeliever to repentence not so they can wallow in their sin. That's why a Democrat will always be a poor Christian because the basic theme of the Democratic party is that everything is okay.
